World Health Assembly General - eHealth standardization and interoperability

At the sixty-sixth World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting in Geneva in May 2013, delegates approved a resolution (A66/B/CONF./3) on eHealth standardization and interoperability. The importance of standardized, accurate, timely data and health information to the functioning of health systems and services, was noted by Member States. They also highlighted that the security of this information, and privacy of personal clinical data, must be protected. Evaluation of information and communications technologies in health interventions was also noted. The resolution further emphasizes that health-related global top-level domain names, including “.health”, should be operated in a way that protects public health and is consistent with global public health objectives, and that names and acronyms of intergovernmental organizations, including WHO, be protected in the Internet Domain Name System. (see http://www.who.int/mediacentre/events/2013/wha66/journal/en/) Further information will be available once the full text of the final resolution is available on the WHO website.

COACH Report on health informatics education in Canada

COACH, Canada's Health Informatics Association (www.coachorg.com), has announced the publication of the first-ever Canadian report on the "state of the nation" of health informatics (HI) education. Titled Health Informatics Education in Canada: Landscape of an Emerging Academic Discipline, it represents a collaborative effort between most of Canada's health informatics programs and COACH. See http://www.coachorg.com/en/publications/HI_Education_Report.asp?_mid_=22845 for link to the freely downloadable publication. The report highlights the need for continued collaboration between the schools, as well as the need  for collaboration between academic institutions and COACH and the HI industry more broadly. Among key report findings about the programs were that 73% are in southwestern Ontario, about half offer a co-op placement or internship, and the number 1 reason to start a HI program is meeting HI professionals' (HIP®) needs via new or advanced careers.
